[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row 0=””][vc_column 0=”” width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”The Brief ” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:25|text_align:left|line_height:5″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]The client who came to us was looking to get planning permission for a rooftop bar and restaurant in Norwich (now known as Rooftop Gardens), which was to be based on the top floor of a recently renovated office building (The Union Building) which the client owned.

However, In order to comply with building regulations, the top floor of the building would need to have a third means of escape in the event of a fire. This was really important, as without this the restaurant would have had no hope of getting planning permission, leaving all the client’s plans for the restaurant in tatters.

Asides from the essential fire escape staircase, and thinking ahead to the future when the restaurant would be open, the owner also wanted another fabrication design created for an additional staircase to be built just outside of the kitchen area in the restaurant. This staircase would lead up to the top of the building so that it could be made accessible for storage purposes.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”The Objective ” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:25|text_align:left|line_height:5″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]To plan and design drawings for an outside staircase which would go from the 5th down to the 4th floor of the building, and act as a third means for escape in the event of a fire at the proposed restaurant. The design of this would also need to tie in with the existing staircase located on the west side of the restaurant.

As well as this, we would also design a staircase which would make it possible to access the top of the building to make it accessible for storage purposes.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”The Result” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:25|text_align:left|line_height:5″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]Having had explained to us what was required, we made our way to the top of the building to undertake a measured site survey, and take photos of the various parts of the building where the work would take place.

Once we had all of this, we could then begin designing the all important drawings for the staircases which would help the restaurant to comply with building regulations, and create a means of accessing extra space for storage.

As well as thinking about building regulations, we also made sure that the new staircase designs would tie in with the designs of another staircase on the the west side of the restaurant, so to keep the building design as consistent as possible.

Included in this designing process was the fabrication drawings for the staircases which were to be passed over to to the fabricators. Upon the completion of these, we then went on to work closely with the fabricators to ensure the construction of the staircases matched that of the plans.

Since the construction of these staircases which gave the building a third means of fire escape and access to extra storage space, the restaurant has not only went on to obtain planning permission, but has also been built, opened, and earned an excellent reputation for it’s fine food and fantastic views!
